What Kind of Things Can I Do as a Volunteer?

Here are some examples of the kinds of roles that volunteers fill to make sport happen in the West Midlands.  For real stories - check out the Volunteer's Stories Section.

Timebank have produced a friendly website for people thinking about volunteering.  Volunteering England also have a page.

If you are passionate about a particular sport then have a look at the NGB page for your most relevant contact.

Volunteering is a superb route to getting a career in sport - the careers in sport website is a good information point for those looking to get a job in this field.

Here are some ideas of the kind of roles that you can do related to sport and physical activity:

  • Sports Coach - the typical sports leadership role, but this varies according to who you are working with, from 5 or 6 year olds, 18 year olds looking to make it professionally, or even working with older people who just want to get active.

  • Treasurer - Keep track of the finances

  • Administration - set up fixtures, record results and support the running of the club

  • Events Volunteer - you can volunteer at events - see the noticeboard on this site or...

  • Events Coordinator - Sports organisations are often looking to put on tournaments or events, so people with organisational skills are always in demand

  • Fundraiser - people with creative ideas for how clubs can make their own income are always in high demand.

  • Grounds maintenance - sports that have their own grounds, especially cricket, bowls and golf, but also football and rugby clubs are looking for people to support them.

  • Walk Leader - The NHS, or the local PCT, may run a walking project, and walk leaders are a key part of enabling people to get more active.

  • Equipment Care - some sports require complex equipment, and organisations may be looking for more technical minded people to look after it

  • Bar Staff or Facility Management - Clubs that own their own facility may want people to help running or staffing the facility.
